the original Brazilian Court of the 1930s had kitch- enettes which were removed by Elliott F. Bishop when he took over management in 1932. Hotel rates for these rooms would be in the $500 to $600 a night range during the season (winter months). Larger suites would bring as much as $2,200 a night. Leslie Schlesinger completely redesigned the interior in the makeover using a tropical colonial look with dark wood plantation shutters and sorbet - colored fabrics. Her husband Richard Schlesinger and son own Ceebraid - Signal which purchased the hotel. Her aim was "reestablishing the charm and grace of a ho- tel loved by generations of Palm Beachers." The absence of kitchens is not such a big deal with the Cafe Boulud located in the south courtyard. Chef Boulud, owner of three New York restaurants, is not- ed for his $50 hamburger stuffed with short ribs, foie gras and topped with truffles. And there is no better place to enjoy such dining than the refurbished court- yard under the palms. Bernard Francis "Bernie" Powell, co - owner of the Brazilian Court from 1963 to 1978, died in Pinellas County, Florida August 21, 2008. He was 96 years old. Powell had purchased the Belleview Biltmore Hotel in 1946 for $500,000.
